What is NASP®NASP® is an activity that doesn’t discriminate based on popularity, athletic skill, gender, size, or academic ability. It’s a different kind of team sport.
It’s open to any student. Its biggest supporters are professional educators. Teams come together around one thing: Archery.
The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is a joint venture between state departments of Education and Wildlife along with several archery equipment manufacturers and organizations.
The program promotes student education, physical education, and participation in the life-long sport of Archery. This two to eight-week archery program focuses on providing International Style Target Archery training in physical education classes for grades 4-12.

The program promotes student education, physical education, and participation in the life-long sport of Archery. This two to eight-week archery program focuses on providing International Style Target Archery training in physical education classes for grades 4-12.
The program teaches students to shoot at bulls-eye targets placed in front of an arrow resistant net in their gymnasium.
The core content covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, core strengthening, physical fitness and self-improvement, which is necessary in order to participate in and enjoy the sport of archery as a lifetime activity. The safety and instructional guidelines were adopted from the National Archery Association (NAA) and the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). The aim of the program is to keep kids motivated to stay in school by being involved in a school sponsored activity; the national school dropout rate is 10% and most students (88%) who drop out of schools indicate they were not involved in extra-curricular activities. Archery is a great program which is accessible to all students of nearly all ages, gender and physical and mental abilities. Through it, students are learning focus, self-control, discipline, patience, and the life lessons required to be successful in the classroom and in life. |
Become CertifiedOnce the school has agreed to offer NASP® style archery, the next step will be to get the instructor(s) trained. The schools must send at least one teacher to an 8-hour training course to become a certified archery instructor.
This training is conducted by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. NASP® Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) training courses are offered regularly throughout the year at many locations in each state. You can find a current list of classes on the NASP website at https://naspbai.org/Classsearch.aspx . If you do not see a class that meets your needs, you can contact your state coordinator to request training. If you need any more information or have questions, for TN Classes, please contact Don Crawford at (615)781-6542 or Matt Clarey at (931)484-9571. Once a school decides to teach the program they will need equipment. The total cost for the start-up kit is approximately $3,200.00 depending on the equipment selected. This will allow up to 10 archers to shoot at one time and includes: 12 Genesis bows (10 RH and 2 LH), 10 dozen (2 boxes) 1820 Easton aluminum arrows, 5 targets, 1 bow rack, 1 Arrow Resistant Net (30’X10’) by BCY Inc., and 1 repair kit. TWRA offers a $1,000 reimbursable grant to the schools to help with the funding of the archery kit, and other grants from NASP are sometimes available. |
