germantown gets cooking
The Germantown Municipal School District realizes the importance of learning the benefits of eating home-cooked and healthy meals! The culinary arts are something that we can teach to students at a young age, which will further enhance their understanding and appreciation for healthy and nutritious foods!
This virtual health initiative will see students & staff learn how to cook healthy meals and snacks over the span of 4 weeks. Participants can research and cook any food they'd like that fits into each week's specific category. The videos simply provide an example. Feel free to use your creativity to cook up something unique and original. The layout of this program is as follows:
|
week 1: breakfast |
week 2: sandwiches |
week 2: salads |
week 3: healthy snacks |
week 3: smoothies |
week 4: dinners |

Houston High School's Melissa Gray takes on an important role when it comes to teaching real life skills for her special education students! Melissa has been passionate about teaching her students how to cook and prepare meals, so this challenge was something they has experience with! The videos below show the students at work as they prepare a breakfast for this week's challenge! Melissa shared the following quote with us:
They loved it! Said it was like a cooking video on TV. It is in two parts. Hopefully we will get better with our filming.

hms student cooks up a healthy breakfast
This week I learned skills and how I can use them in the future. For example, I learned how to cut up meats and vegetables to put in my burrito. I can use this whenever the meals I cook need the ingredients to be sliced, I will know how to do that. In addition, I learned how to properly fold a burrito, I can use this when making burritos and not letting the food fall out. In conclusion, I acquired much knowledge while cooking breakfast this week.
week 2: make lunch fun & delicious
Check out this healthy lunch that was prepared by Riverdale Elementary's Art Teacher, Melissa Cychowski! Melissa prepared Vegetable Saute (Recipe from Moosewood Simple Suppers). The preparations paid off and looked fantastic. Melissa was able to create a textbook example of a healthy meal.
I subbed butternut squash for carrots, and added some red onion with the scallions. Roasted red pepper and grated parmesan for garnish Served alongside Parmesan Couscous

week 3: spectacular snacks & smoothies
Mrs. Piia Latvatalo of Houston High and Houston Middle School has set the bar high for week 3! Here’s an easy snack cooked up from Mrs. Latvatalo: “egg muffins” with eggs, beef franks, onion, spinach and cheese! Works as a quick breakfast or lunch, too!
Here’s my breakfast smoothie: milk, bananas, mixed frozen fruit and berries, chia seeds and honey.
I used fresh and frozen bananas and noticed that the consistency was very creamy without any yoghurt because of the frozen banana.

Week 4: Finish it off with delicious Dinners
Piia Latvatalo of HHS and HMS has created some awesome dinners to close out this challenge! The first dinner is oven baked salmon with lots of garlic, served with asparagus, basmati rice, plain yogurt, and salad (grape tomatoes, arugula, baby spinach, onions). Might sound like a lot of work but it actually isn’t!
The second dinner is three-cheese tortellini with tomato sauce, cream cheese, blue cheese, and oregano. (That might actually make it a 5-cheese dinner...)
