cross curricular activities
This section is a collection of resources that I gathered from TeachPhysEd.com.
Here is my latest creation for your classroom. If you are like me and like to have a nice display of vocabulary words the students will learn to know in your class, then you may want this file of words. I know I don't have all of the vocabulary we use in PE but it's a great start!

I like to find and use unique ways for students to earn points or keep score. I’ve used QR codes, playing cards, beanbags, poly spots, tile letters, and much more. While presenting in Amarillo in 2017 I came up with the idea of using various shapes. I took it a step further by also having them in 6 different colors. I took it a step further by also having them in 6 different colors. At the end of the activities you can count scores in different ways!

Show me the money! Instead of going to the store and purchasing fake money, I decided to create my own. Feel fee to click and add this cash to your class! Great way to incorporate some math into class. Instead of students receiving points for something they can earn money. Students can count up at the end of class to see what they earned. Maybe you could use it as a classroom behavior tool!

I completely forgot that I create these word wall letters to go along with the word wall we can use in PE. I started using random images and after talking with some other PE teachers decided to link the image to the sport or equipment that starts with the letter. Example: B=basketball. For a list of the word wall words keep scrolling down and you will find a file I already created.

Want an easy way to show your lower grades the shape of the states and their matching capitals? If so take a look at this file I created that can be used in any class at any time. Think of all the possibilities you can come up with integrating these signs into your program. Maybe instead of collecting a "point" they can collect a state instead!

Some friends and I were recently talking about some integrated activities we use for class. After talking for a little bit, I decided to go ahead and create some state and capital cards. I used all the same font and color to allow for a slight challenge for our older grade levels. I'm sure there are plenty of options for your own cards but feel free to use mine.

I have a lot of activities that I use little tile letters with. Any time I integrate other subject areas into my class I try. Years ago I purchased tile letters. I know some school don't get much of a budget so I created these "tile" letters and cards for you to use. As usual there are color and print friendly versions.

For a while I have been using some alphabet signs for various activities in my classes. The current ones I am using I made years ago and are plan text. Now that I have Comic Life 3, I figured I should make some fun new signs. Each letter is on their own sheet of paper in the PDF file.

Every year in February we use a human heart obstacle course. I place signs of the different parts in the areas of the heart. This year I made new signs! Feel free to download them and use them in your course. If you want to see the obstacle course feel free to check it out.

I have a lot of activities where the students will grab a bean bag or a critter to help keep track of their points. I decided it would be a fun change of pace to have them get a QR code to scan instead. The codes are different point values from 1-10. Now instead of having one beanbag (point), they scan the card and it could be worth any where from 1-10 points!

common core ideas in p.e.
english & language arts1. Read LEPE books!
2. Have bulletin boards in your gym. 3. Use dry erase boards. 4. Have a PE vocabulary word of the day and spell it throughout the class. 5. Make a PE word wall with movement words and have students point to the answers to questions instead of saying them. 6. Have students write jump rope chants for your Jump Rope for Heart event. 7. Have poster and essay contests for units. 8. Post verbal cues for skills and have students read them aloud. 9. Write multiple step directions on the board for students to follow. 10. Have students write a story about themselves as a piece of sporting equipment. 11. Post informational text about the sport or skill you are teaching on bulletin boards. 12. Create a class website/eboard that your students can read and explore. 13. Create handouts with informational text that students can read while waiting in line for their turn. 14. Use Waiting Your Turn Cards. 15. Use Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast sports, exercises, etc. 16. Use Word Webs to teach PE academic vocabulary for concepts, strategies, games, sports, activities, fitness, nutrition. writing3rd-4th grade
After you have gone on "Ziny's Driving School's" solar system field trip have a contest! Solar System Field Trip Contest You are a journalist and a new planet has been discovered in our solar system. Tell the world about the planet, its environment and inhabitants. Describe how they move and what they enjoy doing for exercise and physical entertainment. Be sure to use movement vocabulary and descriptive words! Illustrate an alien in action!! Contests are voluntary- make a bulletin board with the entries and give prizes for most descriptive. |
mathematics1. Check out MathandMovement.com for great instructional materials for the gym.
2. Skip count during warm-ups:For example, post the multiples of three on a wall, count by three's for one exercise. For the next exercise turn one number over so that the students can't see it and count again. With each exercise turn over another number until they have them all memorized. 3. Whenever you need to make groups, ask the students to do the math, i.e. If we have 5 stations and 32 students, how many students will be at each station? 4. When playing scoring games, never have a score count as one point. Make the students think by making 6 point goals! 5. Transition using the times table, i.e. Hop 12 times to the next station, counting by 3's. 6. The kindergarten common core standards require counting to one hundred and to be able to count starting from a number other than one. If you are counting with kindergarten students keep this in mind. 7. Within the same game, give different point values to different scoring options. For example, if you knock over the pin it is worth 4 pts. If you tip over the bucket you get 7. Do the math at the end of the round. Present it as a word problem, "If you knocked over 4 pins and 2 buckets, what is your score?" 8. When keeping score, try starting from 100 (or any other number) and subtract points. Lowest score wins instead of highest. 9. Use the whisper and shout technique to teach multiplication tables. Whisper the non-multiple and shout the multiple. For example- hop (whisper 1), step (whisper 2), jump (shout 3) , hop (whisper 4), step (whisper 5), jump (shout 6). Repeat pattern until 3 X 12. This is a www.Mathandmovement,com idea! 10. Give students their assignment in an equation. For example- We are going to do 10 sets of 10 dribbles alternating right hand and left hand. How many dribbles will you have done by the end? 11. Have students keep a tally score on a dry erase board. At the end of each round of play, give the students the MAGIC MULTIPLIER NUMBER. This is the number that each tally mark is worth. The students need to multiply their tally score with the multiplier to get their final score. (Karen Fischer- Jefferson Primary, Huntington, NY) 12. Teaching bowling- 1st graders- have them determine the number of pins knocked down by the number of pins left standing (Subtraction- 10 pins minus the number of pins standing equals the number knocked down.) 13. Skip count in Spanish or whatever other language your students are learning. (MaryAnne Diehm) 14. Use pedometers or Movbands to measure distance. Add distances by individual, small groups, whole class. Add distances to determine distance traveled virtually to places around the world. |
